Understanding your compliance certificates
Certain trades in the UK must issue a formal safety certificate for specific types of work — an Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) for electrical work, or a Gas Safety Certificate for gas work. This article explains what these certificates are, which trades issue them, and how to access yours through TruePro.
What compliance certificates exist?
Unlike some other trades, plumbing and general building work in the UK don't carry a single statutory "certificate" the same way electrical and gas work do. The two you're most likely to receive through TruePro are:
- Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) — issued by an electrician registered with a competent person scheme (NICEIC, NAPIT, or similar) after new electrical work, a periodic inspection, or when required for a change of tenancy in a rented property.
- Gas Safety Certificate (sometimes called a CP12) — issued by a Gas Safe registered engineer after work on a gas appliance, boiler, or gas pipework. Landlords are legally required to have one renewed annually.
These certificates are proof that the work carried out on your property meets the relevant safety standard, and are often required when selling a property, renewing home insurance, or renting out a home.
Which trades issue these certificates?
Not all trades issue a compliance certificate:
- Electricians — issue an EICR for notifiable electrical work, tested against BS 7671 (the UK Wiring Regulations).
- Gas engineers — issue a Gas Safety Certificate for work on gas appliances and pipework, and must be on the Gas Safe Register by law to do so.
A painter, tiler, plumber, or general builder does not issue a compliance certificate — their work is not governed by the same statutory sign-off requirements, though good practice and building regulations (e.g. Part P for electrical work) still apply.
How do I get my certificate through TruePro?
When a TruePro-verified pro completes work that requires a certificate, they upload it directly to your job. You can download it from your job detail page:
- Open the job from your My jobs dashboard.
- Scroll to the Documents section.
- Click Download next to the compliance certificate.
Store the downloaded certificate safely — you will need it if you sell your property, rent it out, or make an insurance claim. TruePro also keeps a copy attached to the job record, but we recommend keeping your own copy as well.
What if the pro has not uploaded a certificate?
If the work is complete but a certificate has not been uploaded, do not confirm completion yet. Message the tradesperson through the platform and request that they upload the certificate before you confirm completion.
If the tradesperson refuses or is unresponsive, report an issue. A verified tradesperson who is required by law to issue a certificate but fails to do so is in breach of the job agreement. TruePro admin will review the situation and may withhold payment release until the certificate is provided.
Can I request a certificate from a previous job?
If you have an existing certificate from a previous job on TruePro, you can access it from the relevant job's detail page at any time — even after the job is closed. If you need a certificate from work done before you used TruePro, you will need to contact the original tradesperson directly or commission a new inspection.
